Suicide gets a bad press.
Suicide may arguably be
the most basic right of all - the ultimate liberal freedom of humanity*.
If freedom is complete self-ownership
–autonomy for one's own life and body - then the right to end that life is surely
fundamental.
If a day comes when I no
longer wish to live, either through gross and chronic infirmity or
psychological malaise, I hope to have the opportunity to euthanize myself
without stigma.
If others can force you to
live, you do not own yourself; you belong to them as a slave.
Any loved one that has
killed themself was obviously suffering greatly in life to consider such a big,
socially-controversial and - dare I say - brave step; surely we should be happy
they are no longer enduring torment?
Though we grieve as an
instinct, thinking rationally in some way should we not celebrate suicide?
